Summary

Hill Hole was once one of four whole granite hills in the area, the other three being Billa Barra, Cliffe Hill and Bardon. Trees once covered the hill top, but they were felled to be used as pit props in Desford Colliery in 1916. A quarry opened on the site in 1852, a dangerous place to work, with at least six men dying there during the latter half of the 19th century. In the 1990s, Hill Hole Quarry was briefly considered for use as a scuba diving centre, prior to Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council purchasing the site in 2001 as a nature area within the National Forest.

The site is a total of 5.2 hectares, including a water filled quarry, small wooded area, open grassland with exposed rock faces, and allotment gardens. There are surface paths around the site but also some steep climbs. Hill Hole Quarry is located to the north-west of Markfield, between Hill Lane and St Michael and All Angels Church.
