Outdoor learning

Outdoor learning

The National Forest is helping to create a greener and healthier future for all young people. Over 90% of primary schools in the National Forest now provide regular outdoor learning within their grounds or local woodland settings and we are committed to supporting more opportunities across the Forest.

Why support outdoor learning?

We believe that outdoor learning is vital for children's education. Research shows that connecting and spending time in nature enhances learning, wellbeing, and overall development. For many children, outdoor environments offer unique sensory experiences and opportunities for growth, with many experiencing transformational moments that ignite curiosity and foster a lifelong love for learning and nature.

Available advice

We work with schools and education providers for all age groups from early years through to secondary school, including supporting Years 10 to 13 pupils to achieve a Level 1 Forestry in the Community Award.

Other support includes:

  • create outdoor natural spaces where young people can learn in a safe and fun environment
  • ensure staff have the confidence and skills to run outdoor sessions in the Forest
  • receive peer support from our National Forest ‘Champion Schools’

Our team is always happy to provide advice and support on how to develop the next step in your outdoor learning journey.

National Forest Small Grants

We believe we can cultivate change, one project at a time. Some projects may not easily fit into our existing grant schemes but are still bringing about positive change. We've created a small grants fund to help support inspiring projects and ideas that engage communities and visitors and help to grow sustainable businesses in the Forest.
