Bluesky International, a leading aerial survey company in the UK, recently conducted tree canopy research on behalf of the National Forest, utilising state-of-the-art technology to take digital aerial photography and collate height data on 20 of the most popular walking routes.
Using data from its National Tree Map™, Bluesky calculated the canopy cover, which is the extent to which the forest canopy shades the ground below, enhancing the experience for those looking for shaded, peaceful walks.
And the findings were exciting for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the healing power of nature, as many trails in the Forest have seen an increase in their canopy cover over the last five to nine years.
The Coton Circular trail, with its impressive canopy cover of 61.9%, emerges as a verdant oasis, inviting walkers to immerse themselves in its lush surroundings. This gentle six-mile walk links six young woodlands in the attractive rolling landscape of the Mease Lowlands. Along the way, you will notice the distinguishing features and rich history of each woodland, from the remanence of a historical lane at Coton Wood to the remains of a former mineral railway, signs of a medieval ridge and furrow at Top Wood. You’ll also spot the Noon Column in the open glade at Grangewood, where, if you visit on a sunny day, you will witness the rays of sun at true noon each day.
Similarly, the Monks and Moorings trail captivates with its abundant greenery, boasting a canopy cover of 60.6%. Along this 6.8 mile walk, you will encounter the past and future of Burton and the surrounding area. You will witness how the Trent and Mersey Canal played a part in the town's industrial history and how old gravel workings have been transformed into a nature reserve, now bustling with birdlife. You will pass the historic Sinai House, enjoy wonderful views from the Needwood scarp, pass through ancient woodlands and complete the links with the future by visiting new woodlands planted as part of the developing Forest.
Meanwhile, the Blackbrook Beauty trail enchants with its verdant charm, showcases a canopy cover of 57.6%. This charming 6.8-mile circular walk encompasses rich history with ancient wooded trails and panoramic views over Charnwood Forest. Along the way you will discover one of Charnwood’s famed rocky outcrops, visit the glistening waters of Blackbrook Reservoir and immerse yourself in the historical landmarks of the area, as well as catch a glimpse of the many species of birds, insects and reptiles in this nature-rich haven.
But it's not just about the shade and attractiveness – the benefits of increased canopy cover extend far beyond aesthetics. Research suggests that spending time in green spaces can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while improving mood and cognitive function. The dense foliage acts as a natural barrier, muffling the noise pollution from the outside world and creating a peaceful haven where one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
So, next time you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed, consider taking a leisurely stroll in the Forest. Not only will you be treating yourself to a much-needed dose of natural therapy, but you'll also be contributing to the preservation of these invaluable green spaces.
