Summary
Be transported back to the 1400s with a family visit to Ashby de la Zouch Castle. Originally a manor house, the site was developed by Lord Hastings in the late 1400s. His grand plans for Ashby de la Zouch included fortification of the manor house with four mighty towers, and a 340-acre deer park. However, Hastings was executed by Richard Duke of Gloucester, later Richard III, in 1483 and the half-completed castle passed to his widow Katherine. The castle remained in the Hastings family until the Civil War when the massive tower was heavily damaged.
Today, this ruined castle makes a fabulous place for all the family to explore. Take the audio guide or set off on your own journey of discovery around the castle site, finding the underground passageway and following the 97 steps up the ruined tower with fabulous views from the top.
There is plenty of space for children to let off steam in the gardens and the whole family to enjoy a stroll. Do not miss the mysterious castle garden, which is famous for its elaborately-shaped sunken features.
