Wildlife events in the Forest to get closer to nature this summer

Summer is a great time to connect with nature and the outdoors, and what better way than by coming along to a wildlife event in the Forest this season. Whether you’re looking to brush up on your butterfly identification, get the kids closer to nature with pond dipping or head out on a twilight walk to learn more about the nocturnal creatures of the Forest – you’re sure to find something that suits you!

Night Watch

Time: 7pm - late

Head out at night to look for nocturnal creatures in the Heart of the Forest with local experts at Rosliston Forestry Centre for an evening of night-time themed walks, talks and displays on bats, badgers, moths, birds and the night sky.

Minibeast Safari

Two children use nets to catch insects

Date: Tuesday 01 August 2023

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Delve into the world of minibeasts, bugs and creepy crawlies on a guided walk around Rosliston Forestry Centre to look for and identify various species found around the site.

£3 per child taking part. No booking required. Meet at the Forest Classroom at 2pm.

Nature & Wellbeing Walks

Wildfowl swim on a lake at Sence Valley

Dates: Sunday 20 August 2023

Time: 2pm - 4pm

If you’re looking for some gentle exercise and the opportunity to see some wildlife, Forestry England’s wellbeing walks at Sence Valley offer an easy-going walk, suitable for all, around the main lakes, giving you a short introduction to nature, the story of the swans and a look at some of the plant life found there.

The event is free of charge and there is no need to book, you can find out more here.

Mammal Walk

Time: 9.30am - 11.30am

Become a mammal detective by joining local expert Helen O'Brien at Bagworth Heath to look for signs, check traps and hopefully spot some mammals on a short walk around the woodlands, meadows and wetlands in the area.

Wildlife Watch: Pond Dipping

Come along to a pond dipping session at Rosliston Forestry Centre and discover some of creatures that lurk beneath the waters of the lake. You'll be amazed at how many different things you'll find sharing this wetland habitat!
