Summary
The Donington le Heath woodlands were created during the first decade of the 21st century by Leicestershire County Council, with more than 6,000 trees being planted, including a variety of native trees and shrubs, funded by the National Forest. The woodlands and public footpaths cover 2.5 hectares, surrounding the council’s ‘1620s House’ at Donington le Heath.
The site comprises a young deciduous woodland, an attractive area of wildflower meadows, two ponds and bramble scrub leading down to the River Sence. The house gardens, re-created in a 17th century style, include flower and herb gardens, an ornamental maze and an orchard. The manor house has been home to many families over its 700-year history, including once being home of the gunpowder plotter Sir Everard Digby.
