Beacon Hill Country Park

Throughout the centuries, a beacon would have been lit on Beacon Hill to announce coming danger or an important national event. Today, Beacon Hill in Leicestershire is a great place to explore and learn more about trees, plant life and geology. It has a native woodland area, planted as part of the National Forest in 1995, containing all 28 tree species native to the British Isles and the heathland of Beacon Hill provides a varied habitat for plants and animals. Look out for the grazing livestock, including English Longhorn and Highland cattle, Manx Loaghtan and sheep who play a vital part on maintaining the heathland so that the native plants and flowers can flourish.  

As you stroll around the park, there is plenty to discover. Why not download the sculpture map and follow the trail of dramatic chainsaw carvings including the green man, wizard, axe man and rock face? Then get ‘lost’ in the labyrinth of rhododendron shrubs, and watch the children let off steam in the natural play area. When you have explored all areas of the park, you can enjoy a well-earned treat in the Beacon Hill café or settle down in the picnic area.  

Beacon Hill Park is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its ecological and geological importance and it is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Designated paths and trails will help you to take in the best of what the park has to offer and then enjoy your picnic or visit the café for a tempting treat.
